Toxic Blue-Green Algae at Llandrindod Lake: A Local Crisis in Pictures

Llandrindod Lake, a tranquil and much-loved local landmark in Mid Wales, is currently facing a serious environmental emergency. A bloom of toxic blue-green algae has taken over the water, starving it of oxygen and killing off wildlife. As a local photographer, I visited the lake to document what’s happening – through both the lens and the voices of those fighting to save it.

“We’re fighting a losing battle”

Members of the Lakeside Angling Club have been working around the clock to manually re-oxygenate the water. As reported by the County Times, club member Rhys Davies warned: “Perch, roach and rudd are dying as we speak… without more oxygen going into the water from other pumps this could end in disaster.”

Despite their efforts using old fire station pumps and borrowed equipment, the oxygen levels remain critically low. More than 250 carp and countless smaller fish are now at risk. Algae outbreaks like this have happened before – most notably in 2006 when the entire fish population was wiped out. This year is dangerously close to repeating that history.

Through the Lens: What I Saw

The lake has developed a thick, luminous green scum along the surface – a clear sign of the algae’s grip. Fish are visibly struggling near the surface or lying motionless beneath it. Once vibrant with movement and birdsong, the lake now feels quiet, stifled.

Where Are the Authorities?

Powys County Council (PCC) has acknowledged the issue but claims they are limited in their response due to lack of equipment and staff. According to their spokesperson: “We have been unable to obtain other suitable aerators and the manpower to run them without impacting on wider council services.”

Local efforts have clearly prevented the worst outcome – for now. Without more official support, the volunteers say this effort is unsustainable. As Rhys Davies put it: “As a club we’ll do what we can but we can only do so much.”

This Is More Than a Local Story

This crisis isn’t just about one lake. It reflects broader environmental pressures: warming temperatures, underfunded infrastructure, and increasing strain on our natural resources. Llandrindod Lake is a symbol of both neglect and of community strength.

Photography That Documents & Advocates

As a photographer based in Llandrindod Wells, I’m proud to use my lens to tell stories that matter. This isn’t the usual kind of beauty I’m known for capturing — but it’s an important one. If you are part of a local organisation, media outlet or environmental group and would like to use these images to support awareness or fundraising efforts, please get in touch.
