Best Time of Day for Engagement Photos in Wales

If you’re planning an engagement shoot and wondering what time of day will give you the best results, you’re not alone. Lighting can make a huge difference in how natural and flattering your photos look — and it’s one of the most important things I consider as a photographer.

Golden Hour is Your Best Friend

Golden hour is the period shortly after sunrise or before sunset when the sun is low in the sky and creates soft, warm light. This light is incredibly flattering for skin tones and adds a dreamy glow to your images. In Mid Wales, this often means shooting early morning or just before dusk, depending on the season.

Why Midday Isn’t Ideal (But Can Work)

Midday sun can be harsh, causing strong shadows and squinting. However, if we’re shooting in shaded woodland, near water, or on an overcast day, it can still produce beautiful results. I’ll guide you to the right spots to avoid direct sunlight and find natural diffused light.

Planning Around Your Location

If you’re heading into the Elan Valley or Brecon Beacons, it’s worth noting how the landscape can affect light. Open hillsides are best at golden hour, while forest trails or shaded spots can work better earlier in the day when the light is still soft.

My Top Tip

Trust your photographer to suggest the best time based on location and season. I always scout ahead or draw on my local knowledge to make sure we’re making the most of the available light — without needing to stress over the weather forecast.
