Natural, relaxed wedding photography starts with helping you feel at ease
If the idea of being photographed all day makes your stomach turn a little, you’re not alone. One of the most common things couples tell me is, “We’re a bit awkward in front of the camera” – and that’s completely normal.
As a wedding photographer based in Mid Wales, I work with a documentary-style approach that focuses on real, honest moments. You don’t have to fake smiles, strike stiff poses, or feel like you’re on display. Here’s how I help you feel relaxed – and how you can prepare to feel like yourself on the big day.
1. Choose a photographer who makes you feel comfortable
This is the biggest one. Connection with your photographer is everything. You’ll spend more time with them than almost anyone else on your wedding day, so it’s important that you feel comfortable being yourself.
Take time to chat with your photographer beforehand, ask questions, and choose someone whose energy feels calm and supportive.
2. Consider an engagement session
An engagement shoot is a great way to warm up to being in front of the camera before the wedding. It’s relaxed, low-pressure, and gives you a chance to see how your photographer works. You’ll also walk away with some beautiful photos you can use for your invites or wedding website.

3. Focus on each other, not the camera
The best photos happen when you’re not thinking about being photographed. Laugh with your partner. Chat with your friends. Soak it all in. My job is to capture those moments as they naturally unfold — not to interrupt or force anything.
4. Trust the process
A professional wedding photographer knows how to gently guide you into flattering light or angles without making it feel stiff or awkward. During couple portraits, I’ll give you simple direction if needed but mostly encourage you to move, connect, and be yourselves.
You won’t be left wondering what to do — and you won’t be stuck in forced poses either.
5. Embrace the imperfect moments
Real weddings are full of movement, emotion, and spontaneity — and that’s what makes them beautiful. Let go of the idea of looking “perfect” in every shot. You’ll look like you, and that’s the most important thing.
My Approach to Relaxed Wedding Photography
- Calm, friendly presence (I blend in, not take over)
- Documentary style with natural, gentle direction during portraits
- No forced smiles or awkward posing
- Coverage that tells your story exactly as it felt
- Final galleries filled with emotion, atmosphere, and genuine connection
You Don’t Have to Be a “Photo Person”
You don’t need to know how to pose, and you definitely don’t need to worry about looking perfect. I’ve worked with camera-shy couples, people who “hate having their photo taken”, and even a few who were dreading it — and they all walked away with photos they love.
If you’re looking for a natural, relaxed wedding photographer in Mid Wales, Herefordshire, or Shropshire, I’d love to help you feel comfortable, confident, and most importantly- like yourselves.
