Simple tips for a relaxed, personality-filled photo shoot
Booking a pet photography session is such a lovely way to celebrate your four-legged family member. Whether you’ve got a new puppy, a golden oldie, or a rescue dog with tons of character, a professional photo session gives you lasting images that really reflect who they are.
As a Mid Wales pet photographer, I’ve photographed dogs of all ages, energy levels, and personalities — from bounding spaniels in the hills to nervous rescues who need a little extra time and space. Here’s how to prepare your dog (and yourself) for a relaxed and successful pet photo session.
1. Choose a familiar location
Pick a place where your dog feels safe and happy. This could be your home, garden, or a favourite walking trail. Familiar smells and sights help dogs settle quickly, which makes the photos more natural and the session more fun.
Top tip: If your dog is anxious around new people, we can start with a few quiet minutes just walking together so they can get used to me and my camera.
2. Bring their favourite treats or toy
A few tasty treats go a long way in keeping your dog’s attention (and rewarding good behaviour). A favourite toy or ball can also help bring out their playful side and create some lovely, candid moments.
Top tip: Avoid squeaky toys unless you want very curious or confused expressions in your photos!
3. Give them a bit of exercise
A little walk before the session helps take the edge off any nervous energy. But don’t wear them out completely — we still want them alert and expressive for the camera.
4. Keep collars clean (or stylish!)
Your dog will likely wear a collar or harness in many of the photos, so take a moment to clean or swap it if it’s muddy or worn. Some people choose a favourite bandana, bowtie or neutral-tone collar for a cleaner look.
5. Relax and go with the flow
The best pet portraits come from moments of genuine connection — not perfection. Dogs don’t always sit still or follow cues, and that’s totally fine. My sessions are relaxed and flexible, with plenty of time to pause, play, or work around your dog’s pace.

Bonus tip: Bring water and wipes
Especially on warmer days or after a muddy walk, having a bit of water and a towel on hand can help keep your pup comfortable and photo-ready.
