Breathtaking spots in Mid Wales for relaxed, romantic couple photos
If you’re recently engaged (congratulations!) and dreaming of an engagement shoot surrounded by natural beauty, the Elan Valley in Mid Wales is a perfect choice. With dramatic landscapes, peaceful woodlands, and quiet waterside walks, it’s full of locations that create stunning, meaningful backdrops for your photos.
As a local photographer based in Mid Wales, I’ve explored these areas many times and love helping couples choose a spot that reflects their story. Whether you’re camera-shy or love a bit of adventure, here are five of my favourite engagement shoot locations in the Elan Valley.
1. Craig Goch Dam
Iconic views with wide open skies
Craig Goch is one of the most recognisable dams in the Elan Valley and a fantastic location for engagement photos. The stone structure, the dramatic sweep of water, and the surrounding hills give a sense of scale and timelessness to your session.
Best for: dramatic landscapes, soft golden hour light, sweeping views
Tip: Bring warm layers — it can get breezy!
2. Caban Coch Reservoir
Reflections and peaceful, open water
Caban Coch offers something gentler — calm water, soft reflections, and quiet walking trails nearby. It’s ideal if you’re after a relaxed, slower-paced shoot that feels like a countryside stroll with photos along the way.
Best for: quiet moments, romantic reflections, walking shots
Tip: Late afternoon light brings out the richness in the surrounding hillsides.
3. Elan Valley Visitor Centre Trail
Accessible beauty with plenty of variety
If you’d like a location with easy access (no hiking boots required), the trails near the Visitor Centre offer river views, lush greenery, and wooden bridges that create lovely compositional frames for portraits.
Best for: relaxed sessions, nervous couples, a mix of nature backdrops
Tip: Great option for winter or early spring shoots when the light is softer and low.
4. Garreg Ddu Dam & Bridge
Architectural interest and tranquil forest paths
Garreg Ddu’s curved bridge and reservoir are perfect if you love a mix of architecture and nature. The surrounding forest paths offer dappled light, tree-lined walkways, and a peaceful atmosphere that feels beautifully intimate.
Best for: variety of textures, both natural and structural
Tip: Arrive early to avoid walkers and have the bridge to yourselves.

5. Claerwen Reservoir
Off the beaten path and full of wild beauty
Claerwen is a little further out but well worth the drive. Rugged, untamed, and quieter than the other dams, it’s a brilliant choice if you want a more adventurous shoot or love the idea of wind-in-your-hair images against raw, natural scenery.
Best for: adventure lovers, storytelling photos, elopement vibes
Tip: It’s remote — pack snacks, boots, and be ready for changeable weather!
Planning Your Engagement Shoot in Elan Valley
Every couple is different, and your location should reflect that. Some people feel most at home in wide open spaces, while others prefer a hidden woodland path or a quiet waterside walk. When we plan your engagement session together, I’ll help you choose a location that suits your style, your story, and how you want to remember this moment.
I’ll guide you gently throughout the shoot, so you’re never left wondering what to do — but it’ll never feel staged or stiff. Just the two of you, in a stunning part of Wales, captured naturally.
