Is a Pre-Wedding Shoot Necessary?

A pre-wedding shoot is not essential, but for a lot of couples it is genuinely useful.

If you are unsure whether to book one, the easiest way to think about it is this: a pre-wedding shoot gives you time to get comfortable in front of the camera before the wedding day, and it gives you a clearer sense of how your photographer works.

For some couples, that makes a big difference. For others, it is something they are happy to skip. It depends on your budget, your confidence in front of the camera, and how much value you place on having that extra time together before the wedding.

When a pre-wedding shoot is worth doing

A pre-wedding shoot is especially useful if:

  • you feel awkward being photographed
  • you want to build confidence before the wedding
  • you would like photos for your wedding website or invitations
  • you are planning an outdoor ceremony or elopement
  • you want more relaxed couple photos in a different location

When you might skip it

You may not need one if:

  • you already feel comfortable in front of the camera
  • your budget is tight and you want to keep things simple
  • you are happy to keep all couple photos to the wedding day itself

My view as a photographer

In my experience, couples rarely regret doing a pre-wedding shoot. It gives you breathing space, helps you feel more natural, and often makes the portrait part of the wedding day quicker and easier.

That said, it is not a requirement. Good wedding photography does not depend on having one. It is simply a useful option if it suits your priorities.
